Our Sesquicentennial (that’s a 150 year Anniversary, for everyone who’s too young to know such a term) is coming up in 2009!
1889 Alleghany Star Reprint
The Sesquicentennial Celebration Committee recently re-printed the first edition of the Alleghany Star, a paper which was started in 1889, by H.K. Boyer and A.S. Carson.
The entire Volume 1, Number 1 paper is included, along with news stories from other area papers that have occurred within the last 120 years.
This publication is the first fundraiser for the County’s Sesquicentennial project. The papers are sold for $.50 and will be available over the year of the Sesquicentennial.
In addition to news stories, the interior of the paper features advertisements for businesses around today, but are styled in an antique look.
The entire paper is in black and white and without photographs, as it wasn’t possible to print them in 1889.
There are, however, several line illustrations and it’s interesting to see what type of old-timey graphic each modern company has in its ad.
Pick up one (or several) of these papers the next time you’re in town. And be sure to support the Sesquicentennial by supporting the advertisers!
